The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is strongly international, with approximately 300 employees from over 50 countries. The Department is a fully integrated department with the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology as principles. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is now looking for a senior lecturer with a focus on research and teaching with University of Gothenburg as employer.

The candidate will work within Data Science and AI division (DSAI), with around 20 faculty members and 50 PhD students and postdocs. Research at the division DSAI ranges from foundational methods in algorithms, data science, and machine learning (e.g., optimization, bandits and reinforcement learning) and their connections to domains, especially natural language processing, natural and life sciences, and medical/clinical/pharmaceutical applications (having close collaborations with Sahlgrenska University Hospital and AstraZeneca). The division is multi-disciplinary in character and has strong international collaborations.

You will contribute to the DSAI division’s teaching mission by instructing courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, while pursuing innovative research independently and collaboratively with colleagues across the division.

Data science and AI

Subject area description 

We are looking for candidates in all areas of modern AI/ML, data science and algorithms. Of particular interest are the following two domains (other application domains are not excluded):

  • Computational biology (techniques to deal with large omics data sets, especially machine learning and algorithmic methods tailored to recent advances in single cell measurements)
  • Natural language processing (particularly interesting areas include interpretability, structured data, neurosymbolic methods, multimodality, and recent advances such as reasoning models)

Duties 

We offer a position with an emphasis on research and education. We are looking for someone who can significantly contribute to the department's ambition to provide research and education at high international level.

  • You will carry out research in your area of specialization and apply for research grants.
  • You will supervise PhD students in this research area.
  • You will be encouraged to develop your own research agenda in collaboration with our strong teams and complement existing research.
  • You will teach at the courses and programs given by the DSAI division. You will develop these courses pedagogically.
  • You will be encouraged to participate in the planning and development of the division’s master’s programs and corresponding courses.
  • You will supervise thesis projects at the bachelor's and master’s levels.
  • You are encouraged to engage with society, for example through collaborative projects and popular science activities.

Eligibility 

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. 

To be eligible for appointment as a senior lecturer, other than within disciplines in the fine, applied or performing arts, the applicant is required to have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve. You hold a doctoral degree in data science and AI or an equivalent field.

Assessment criteria 

Applications will primarily be assessed based on scientific and teaching qualifications and potential related to the areas related to this position.

Deep knowledge of the topic of data science and AI is required, and you must have demonstrated ability to teach courses in this area.

The candidate is expected to be deeply involved in state of the art research, since our research and teaching aims to be well connected with the research frontier. When assessing scientific competence, special attention is paid to research documented through high-quality publications. A documented ability to initiate, plan and implement research after the doctoral degree, international scientific collaboration, and ability to obtain research funding in competition are meritorious.

Ability to teach in Data Science/AI and related areas at the university level should be documented. Experience and familiarity with course development and/or program management are meritorious. Supervision at all levels is considered an asset.

You must be very comfortable with spoken and written English. Proficiency in Swedish is considered meritorious.

Practical and industrial experience in the field is meritorious.

Courses in higher education teaching and learning of at least 15 credits or equivalent are considered as a merit. If this is lacking at the time of employment, the employee is expected to acquire such an education later.

After a weighted assessment of merits and development potential in all areas, we will select the candidate that is judged to have the best qualifications to carry out the tasks included in the employment, independently and in collaboration with other staff members, and contribute to a positive development of the department and work environment.
