Further Vacancy Details
Post-Doctoral Researcher, School Of Chemistry, College of Science, Engineering and Food Science
17 Months, Fixed-Term, Whole-Time Post

Position Summary
Applications are invited for the role of Post-Doctoral Researcher within the School of Chemistry.

Horizon Europe FreeHydroCells Project
The FreeHydroCells project aims to create a newly designed materials-based array system to vastly improve the efficiency of harnessing renewable solar energy to split water and to convert that energy into chemical energy for storage in the bonds of hydrogen as fuel. For this purpose, we will design and create a novel, freestanding, tandem, buried many-junction (BMJ) photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell to split water unassisted.
As part of this mult-iparnter EU consortium project, the position here in UCC focuses on rational design and 3D printing of microlattice electrodes of various order, surface area, porosity etc. to be coated with appropriate materials derived out of  partners. These microlattice printed electrode will be tested for electrochemical and photochemical water splitting, and with broadband acoustic resonance dissolution spectroscopy (BARDS) to monitor gas evolution in real time and assess the influence of surface area and pore volume on bubble formation, gas reabsorption in the water and true captured gas evolution volume. The work will be conducted within UCC, with our partners in Tyndall National Institute, CEA (France), AMO and RTWH (Germany) and CNR (Italy).

Project Title: Freestanding energy-to-hydrogen fuel by water splitting using earth-abundant materials in a novel, eco-friendly, sustainable and scalable photoelectrochemical cell system.
