Researcher in Biological Sciences
University of Helsinki
Finland

Institution: University of Helsinki – Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences
Group: Dr. James Ord, Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Research Program
Affiliation: Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in Tree Biology (TreeBio)
Position Type: Doctoral Researcher (3.5–4 years) or Postdoctoral Researcher (2 years, possible extension)
Start Date: Ideally March 2026, or by mutual agreement
Application Deadline: 7 November 2025

Project Overview

Rapid environmental changes may outpace genetic variation, but epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation (DNAme) can provide additional flexibility in adaptation. Trees, as sedentary organisms, face unique environmental pressures across their lifespan.

This project investigates DNAme in birch trees (Betula pendula), exploring:

  • How DNAme drives trait variation

  • Responses of DNAme to environmental stress

  • The role of genome structural variation using advanced pangenome approaches

  • High-throughput phenotyping of stomatal traits via machine learning

Responsibilities

  • Perform epigenomic profiling via whole genome bisulfite sequencing

  • Link epigenomic variation to phenotypic traits under environmental stress

  • Employ machine learning for data analysis and trait prediction

  • Engage creatively and critically in experimental design and data interpretation

  • Collaborate with an international research team

Candidate Profile

Doctoral Researcher:

  • Master’s degree in molecular biology, genomics, evolutionary biology, or related field

  • Must obtain the right to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Helsinki within 6 months

Postdoctoral Researcher:

  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, genomics, evolutionary biology, or related field

Desirable qualifications for both:

  • Experience with genomic/epigenomic data analysis

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research team

Benefits

  • Salary according to the University of Helsinki’s system (task-specific and performance components)

  • Occupational health care and health insurance

  • Access to high-quality sports facilities

  • Opportunities for professional development

  • Affiliation with a world-leading research institute in plant biology and genomics
