About the Department

We aim to promote health in the population by optimizing diagnostics, prevention, and treatment of diseases in the oral and craniofacial areas. Our purpose includes research-based and research-integrating teaching to ensure that basic, translational, and clinical research reaches clinical practice.

We focus on interdisciplinary research across three research sections and collaborate with national and international institutions, municipalities, regional hospitals, private practices, and businesses in the medical field to solve complex challenges regarding interactions between oral and medical diseases. The main body of staff at the Department of Odontology is financed by public funding. The position is affiliated with the subject area of Community Dentistry, which is part of the Section of Oral Health, Society and Technology.


Job Description

When considering applications for the professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of Community Dentistry.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced researcher to lead and develop research in the field of oral health and its connection to society, quality of life, general health, social function, and inequality. The candidate must be a recognized expert with in-depth knowledge of the Danish/Scandinavian dental care systems, legislation, and resource allocation, as well as the individual and societal implications of oral health and diseases.

The candidate is expected to employ both qualitative and quantitative research methods to explore the societal and social aspects of oral health. This includes conducting clinical intervention studies, registry-based research, and interviews. The candidate must demonstrate a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and co-creation with stakeholders, including community members, patients, policymakers, and other relevant parties, to jointly develop and implement research projects that benefit patients, society, and the department.

The candidate will be expected to contribute with high-quality research-based and research-integrating teaching in the pre-graduate curriculum.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination

  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination

  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers

  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate

  • Academic assessments

  • Examination of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students

  • Research-based public-sector consultancy may be required


Required Qualifications

To be qualified for a professor position, applicants will be assessed according to six overall criteria for recognizing merit at the University of Copenhagen: research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding, and leadership.

The candidate is expected to have a high level of oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish and to speak/understand the language at a sufficient level within a reasonable period to be able to teach and keep patient records in Danish, as required by Danish legislation.

The candidate must have completed the MSc degree in Dentistry (equivalent to the Danish 2-year Master programme, entailing authorization). Candidates with the right to work independently as a dentist in accordance with Danish legislation will be preferred.

Personal competences considered:

  • Expert in Community Dentistry performing original and innovative research at a high international level with interdisciplinary impact

  • Excellent communicator publishing in international peer-reviewed journals and contributing to public debate

  • Collaborative, promoting long-lasting partnerships with researchers, hospitals, industry, and stakeholders

  • Leader with skills to manage research and teaching with emphasis on inclusion, diversity, and trust; committed PhD/student supervisor

  • Health advocate and promoter with insight into societal needs for public and global health

  • Contributor to life-long learning and department development

  • Professional in daily work and interactions with colleagues, students, and patients

Documentation required:

  • High degree of original academic production at an international level, including significant contributions to the discipline

  • Research management and commitment to external academic activities, knowledge, and technology transfer

  • Research-based teaching

The professor must also possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.


Terms of Employment

  • Permanent position

  • Average weekly working hours: 37 hours

  • Salary and terms set according to the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organisations

  • Covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2025

Application procedure:

After the deadline, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. Applicants are notified whether their application passed for assessment. The Dean appoints an expert assessment committee. Selected applicants are notified of the committee composition and may comment on parts of the assessment relating to themselves.
