Institute Overview

The Neuroscience Institute at the University of Miami catalyzes discovery across the brain and mind sciences by connecting basic, computational, and translational research.

Core strengths span molecular and cellular neuroscience, neurogenetics and epigenetics, neurodevelopment and regeneration, systems neuroscience, and cell–environment interactions—with strong opportunities at the interfaces of engineering, data science, and life sciences.


Position Summary

The Director will be a visionary, collaborative leader who sets strategic direction, fosters scientific excellence, and advances a culture of inclusive, team-based research.

Key responsibilities include recruiting and mentoring world-class talent, stewarding core facilities, enabling multi-PI programs, and expanding the Institute’s impact through high-risk, high-reward initiatives and sustained extramural funding.

The Director will lead the strategic growth of Aging and Computational Biology programs, embedding them as core elements of the Institute’s research strategy.


Key Responsibilities

Strategy, Fiscal Oversight & Governance

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan with clear scientific priorities, growth objectives, and resource requirements.

  • Establish transparent governance structures, including executive and advisory committees.

  • Oversee fiscal operations of the Institute in alignment with institutional goals and available resources.

Research Leadership & Programs

  • Build transdisciplinary programs that support large-scale grants, program projects, and training mechanisms.

  • Promote high-risk, high-reward research through seed funding, milestone-based evaluation, and rigorous oversight.

  • Launch integrated initiatives in Aging, Computational Biology, and Neuroscience.

People, Culture & Training

  • Conduct annual faculty progress reviews and manage promotion and tenure processes.

  • Recruit, retain, and mentor faculty, postdocs, students, and staff to foster a collaborative and inclusive culture.

  • Enhance graduate and postdoctoral training programs, including curriculum development, T32 training grants, and career development initiatives.

Funding, Partnerships & Impact

  • Expand a diversified funding portfolio across federal agencies, foundations, industry, and philanthropy.

  • Build strategic partnerships with departments such as Neurology, Genetics, Psychiatry, Neurological Surgery, Engineering, Computer Science, and Biology, as well as national labs and research consortia.

  • Represent the Institute to internal and external stakeholders.

Operations, Compliance & Assessment

  • Ensure compliance with research integrity, safety protocols, and regulatory standards.

  • Define and monitor key performance indicators to drive continuous improvement.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent in Neuroscience or a closely related field.

  • Distinguished record of scholarly impact and sustained extramural funding.

  • Demonstrated leadership of complex academic or research organizations.

  • Proven excellence in mentorship and commitment to diversity and inclusion.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience launching and managing interdisciplinary centers, cores, and large-scale collaborations (e.g., NIH center grants, U-series awards).

  • Success in strategic planning, resource development, and engagement with industry or philanthropic partners.

  • Leadership experience in Aging and/or Computational Biology/Neuroscience programs.
