About the Research Group

The Particle Physics Research Group at the Department of Physics is an active member of:

  • Virgo Collaboration

  • Einstein Telescope (ET) Collaboration

  • ETpathfinder Collaboration

The group conducts research in:

  • Sensors and Actuators

  • Seismic Attenuation

  • Control Systems

  • Gravitational Wave Instrumentation

The group:

  • Operates a dedicated LVDT characterization setup.

  • Developed a prototype "Corecoil LVDT".

  • Recently acquired a MIGA-derived GAS filter that will be developed into a complete local suspension system at UAntwerp for sensor and control development.

Research Project Overview

Seismic noise is a dominant low-frequency limitation for ground-based gravitational wave detectors.

Current mitigation relies on multi-stage attenuation systems that combine:

  • Inverted Pendulums

  • Geometric Anti-Spring (GAS) Filters

These systems use:

  • High-precision Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) position sensors

  • Voice-coil actuators

for monitoring and active damping.

The PhD project focuses on:

  1. Development of improved LVDT sensor designs beyond current Virgo and ETpathfinder baselines.

  2. Commissioning of the MIGA-based local suspension system.

  3. Contributions to commissioning ETpathfinder suspensions, including setup and tuning of active control algorithms.

The most successful sensor prototypes are expected to be deployed in:

  • ETpathfinder seismic filters

  • Potentially Advanced Virgo+ Phase 2 recycling-cavity suspensions
