The department of linguistics of the Arts Faculty is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Dutch Linguistics.


Function

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defense of a PhD thesis in the field of Dutch Linguistics. You will investigate the acquisition of sentence structures (e.g. passive sentences like The mailman is being chased by the dog) in a second language (L2). One the one hand, you will do this by conducting sentence production experiments in Ukrainian learners of Dutch and Dutch learners of Ukrainian and Swedish. At the same time you will test which computational models are most succesful in simulating this learning process.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching support tasks for courses in line with your research topic.

Profile

  • You hold a Master Degree in Linguistics, Digital Tekst Analysis, Experimental Psychology, or related fields or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You obtained excellent grades.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • Knowledge of Dutch and Ukrainian (or a different Slavic language) is an asset.
  • You have some experience with linguistic research (e.g., psycholinguistics) and/or with analyzing quantitative data.
  • You have a basic understanding of statistical and/or programming skills and are willing to receive further training in these areas.
  • You possess the necessary social skills to establish smooth collaboration with the target audience.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of 4 years. You start with a contract for one year, which can be extended following a positive evaluation.
  • The planned start date is October 1st 2026 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • As a doctoral researcher, you will have access to a wide and varied range of courses and an educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School.
  • You will do most of your work at city campus in downtown Antwerp, in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
