About the Department

The Department of Electronics and Information and Communication Technologies is part of the Faculty of Applied Engineering. We conduct research at the forefront of technology and innovation. The department is now seeking a doctoral scholarship holder to contribute to research on hydroclimate extremes using deep learning approaches.


Position Overview

The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct research leading to a PhD thesis on modeling extreme hydroclimate events using deep learning techniques.

  • Develop deep learning-based methods to study events such as floods, droughts, and compound extreme events and investigate their drivers.

  • Publish scientific articles and present results at international conferences.

  • Perform limited teaching and research support tasks (max 2 hours/week).

  • Contribute to the Horizon Europe project SCEWERO and other relevant projects.

  • Supervise bachelor and master students.


Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold or expect to obtain by start date a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields (completed no earlier than 1 March 2024).

  • Have achieved distinction, cum laude, honours, or onderscheiding for their Master’s degree.

  • Possess strong research skills aligned with departmental policies and high-quality academic output.

  • Be fluent in Python and have expertise in machine learning and deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch).

  • Communicate fluently in English (spoken and written).

  • Have knowledge or experience in hydroclimate extreme event analysis (desirable but not mandatory).

  • Demonstrate organization, prioritization skills, autonomy, and timely task execution.

  • A record of publications in high-ranking conferences or journals is an advantage.
