The group focuses on soft matter, optical tweezers, statistical physics and machine learning. We offer one PhD position in the framework of the Horizon Europe MSCA-Doctoral Network “GREENS: A Training Programme on 5R's implementation in the design, manufacturing and application of micro and nanorobotic platforms (GREENS)”. We are looking for one PhD student at the Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg. The applicants will work in the development of AI tools for image analysis, microscopy and the life cycle of various materials (e.g. composition, transformation) at different stages. Doctoral studies comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree.  As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period, and result in a corresponding extension of the studies. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration. In fulfillment of the MSCA rules, the PhD student has obligation to work exclusively for the GREENS doctoral network for the 36 months supported through the funds of the doctoral network. Eligibility The candidate will have preferably a Master degree in Physics, Engineering, or closely related disciplines. In order to be approved for MSCA financing the applicant, at the time for the application, should not have resided in Sweden more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date [Mobility requirement]. Moreover the applicant must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree [Early-stage researcher requirement]. The candidate must be flexible and keen to work as part of a larger team, and also possess the ability to work independently, have good communication skills in both written and spoken English. The candidate must have documented experience regarding programming, machine learning, AI tools. Doctoral education requires general eligibility and, where appropriate, specific eligibility as set out in the general syllabus for the subject. The general eligibility requirements for doctoral studies are: having completed a degree at second-cycle level, orthe fulfilment of course requirements totalling at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or the acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad. To meet the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies, applicants must: have a second-cycle (advanced-level) degree in a relevant* subject area in the natural sciences, orhave completed studies for at least 60 higher education credits at a second-cycle level in relevant subject areas in the natural sciences, orhave completed a corresponding programme of relevance to the planned third-cycle programme, in Sweden or in another country, or have equivalent qualifications.Relevant for the planned third-cycle education The specific entry requirements also include an acceptable command of spoken and written English. Guidelines for assessing English proficiency may include a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL test (or 213 on the TOEFL-CBT, or 79 on the TOEFL-iBT). Assessment criteria* The selection of applicants who meet the basic and specific eligibility requirements will be based on the ability to assimilate the doctoral studies. In the assessment, special emphasis is placed on documented qualifications regarding programming, machine learning, AI tools for image analysis, microscopy. Knowledge of Python, Matlab, C/C++ or similar programming language is an advantage. Consolidated experience with standard Python ML libraries (e.g., Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch) and software development tooling (git and docker) is preferable. Admission and employment Once you have been admitted to doctoral studies, you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg. The provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993:100. Initial employment as a doctoral student may apply for a maximum of one year, and may be renewed by a maximum of two years at a time. A doctoral student may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but the total period of employment may not be longer than the equivalent of full-time education at doctoral level for four years.
