Postdoctoral Position in Mechanical Engineering (Argonne National Laboratory)

Position Overview The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a Postdoctoral Appointee to support cutting-edge research on simulation-driven composite materials discovery. The successful candidate will conduct large-scale simulation campaigns to generate data for a materials property database and will contribute to the development of AI models for composite design. Working within a multidisciplinary team of engineers, materials scientists, and AI experts, the appointee will: Build and execute finite element simulations for composites with arbitrary microstructures. Predict homogenized material properties using advanced computational tools. Develop AI/ML workflows that propose composite structures given target mechanical or physical properties. Prepare high-quality technical reports, conference papers, and peer-reviewed journal articles. Present research findings at scientific meetings and conferences. This is a full-time, on-site position based at Argonne’s campus in Lemont, Illinois (5 days per week). Position Requirements Minimum Qualifications Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0–5 years) in: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field. Demonstrated experience with the finite element method. Proficiency in C++ and Python. Experience using Unix-based operating systems.
