Position Overview

The Multiphysics Computations Section at Argonne National Laboratory seeks a postdoctoral appointee to perform high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and reduced-order modeling (ROM) of turbulent and reacting flows relevant to advanced propulsion and power generation systems, including gas turbines and detonation engines.

The role involves collaboration with engine modelers, CFD experts, and computational scientists to enhance predictive capabilities for next-generation engine modeling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform high-fidelity CFD simulations of turbulent and reacting flows using spectral element methods (SEM).

  • Conduct scalability studies and optimize simulations on leadership-class supercomputers.

  • Analyze large simulation datasets to gain new insights.

  • Develop and integrate data-driven reduced-order models for turbulence, boundary layer flows, and combustion.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across divisions, laboratories, and universities.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in mechanical/aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, chemical engineering, or related discipline (recent or within last 5 years).

  • Expertise in Nek5000/NekRS or comparable SEM codes.

  • Experience with high-fidelity simulations on supercomputers.

  • Knowledge of scalability studies and performance optimization for large codes.

  • Experience in reduced-order modeling, turbulence, combustion, boundary layer flows.

  • Strong understanding of high-order methods for fluid flows and chemical kinetics.

  • Experience in mesh generation and CAD software.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Collaborative mindset and alignment with Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, Teamwork.

  • On-site presence required at the Argonne campus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interdisciplinary collaborative research experience.

  • Knowledge of large scientific code management and optimization.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package (see Argonne Employee Benefits).

  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge energy and propulsion research.

Application Notes

  • All offers contingent upon background check and possible government access authorization.

  • Argonne National Laboratory is an equal opportunity employer.
