Postdoc Position in Chemistry
University of Gothenburg
Sweden

Reference number PAR 2024/1146

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. We are responsible for postgraduate education in the subject area Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology and educational science. In addition, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry, as well as prescription education. The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education and contributes strongly to the University of Gothenburg's top ranking in life science. We are located in central premises at Natrium, Medicinareberget, Gothenburg.

Our atmospheric science constellation is unique in Sweden in that it takes a molecular approach to transport and reaction processes in the atmosphere. A unifying focus is the study of aerosols, with activities ranging from fundamental studies of chemical reactions on the molecular level, to applied work including field studies of atmospheric processes, their importance to current climate and air quality research. The research group has the main responsibility for an exploratory measurement platform within the ACTRIS-SWEDEN infrastructure and has recently developed a drone platform. In order to make available and develop the use of these infrastructures, a large part of the group's research is linked to the use of data from high-resolution mass spectrometry with chemical ionization

Duties

The project aims to revolutionize real-time assessment of the health and environmental impacts of fire smoke by developing an advanced drone-based monitoring and sampling platform integrated with mass spectrometry (MS). Focusing on the atmospheric chemistry of both primary emissions and secondary aerosol formation, the project utilizes state-of-the-art chemical ionization mass spectrometry techniques. Drones equipped with advanced sensors will collect particles during live fire tests to analyze their chemical composition. This data, combined with real-time measurements, will inform decisions for risk assessments, adjustments to fenced areas, and public information dissemination.

The project is a collaboration with the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) and Greater Gothenburg Fire and Rescue Service (Räddningstjänsten Storgöteborg, RSG). The development of the drone and MS platform—including automated procedures for monitoring, sampling, and enhanced data collection and analysis—will take place at the University of Gothenburg (GU) laboratory. Fieldwork for live fire tests will be carried out in partnership with IVL and RSG. Additionally, the project involves creating a knowledge base and evaluation system for fire events while promoting effective communication and collaboration among project partners, the reference group, and stakeholders.

Qualifications

Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is someone who has a Swedish doctorate or has a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctorate. In the first instance, the candidate should come into question that has completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period and has not previously been employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one year in the same or related subject areas at the University of Gothenburg. Even those who have completed the degree previously can be considered if there are special reasons (e.g. leave due to illness, service in the military, positions of trust in trade unions and student organizations, or parental leave or other similar circumstances).

Additional requirements:

  • Documented experience (scientific publications) of research projects within atmospheric chemistry with applications of mass spectrometry using chemical ionization.

Meritorious:

  • Practical experience in chemical (e.g. FIGAERO inlet) and physical characterization of aerosols particles.
  • Practical experience in using drones for environmental monitoring and sample collection.
  • Knowledge of fire emissions and related chemical processes.
  • Prior experience with tools and methods for managing and evaluating large data sets.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Oral and written communication skills in Swedish.

Employment

The position is fixed-term for 2 years (an extension of one additional year may be possible) on a full-time basis (100%) with placement at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Gothenburg. Start in Spring 2025.
