The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) cluster at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) seeks applicants for a full-time, open rank tenure-track faculty position. An appointment will be made on an initial 3-year contract with the possibility of renewal. Applicants should have background in sociology or related social sciences, with a special focus on digital sociology, sociology of technology, and/or science and technology studies (STS).  Research interests in artificial intelligence (AI) are desirable.

 

The selected candidate will be required to conduct cutting-edge research projects and strengthen teaching for our Minor Degree program in Design, Technology, and Society (DTS) —a design-focused variant of STS. Potential abilities to teach in our postgraduate programs are also valued. This position is also aligned with the HASS cluster’s two strategic research groups — “Population Health” and/or “Green Economy” with interests in AI.

 

Requirements

 

  • Ph.D. in Sociology or related Social Science fields;
  • Expertise in Digital sociology, Sociology of Technology, and/or Science and Technology Studies;
  • Teaching experience in Design, Technology, and Society or similar subjects– preferred;
  • Research interests in AI – preferred
  • Knowledge and experience of research in Population Health and/or Green Economy – preferred;
  • Strong publication records in relevant fields; &
  • Motivated to work in Singapore’s multinational, multidisciplinary, & cutting-edge research environments.

 

About the University and Program

 

SUTD is a new research university established in collaboration with MIT and offers degrees in engineering, computer science, and architecture with a strong emphasis on nurturing socially cognizant innovators, technologists, designers, and entrepreneurs. The HASS department plays a pivotal role in the university’s commitment to world-class teaching and research excellence. The current HASS faculty bring core expertise in anthropology, history, literature, psychology, sociology, urban studies, and the digital humanities. This unique combination of interdisciplinary faculty has given rise to thought-provoking research and teaching that contribute significantly to HASS disciplines, as well as to interdisciplinary projects with other departments at SUTD, such as Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD), Design and Artificial Intelligence (DAI), Engineering Product Development (EPD), Engineering Systems and Design (ESD), and Information Systems Technology and Design (ISTD).

  4. A 500-word description and selected bibliography of up to ten readings for two courses you may wish to offer
  5. A curriculum vitae

  7. Names, affiliations and email addresses of three referees (Please note that candidates who advance to the interview stage will be asked to submit three letters of recommendation. Please have your recommenders ready to send their letters via email or Interfolio).
