Project Overview

  • Develop responsive 4D-printed biomaterial devices for personalized drug delivery.

  • Focus on materials that respond to stimuli (temperature, light, etc.) or change shape over time.

  • Design new 3D-printable materials and functional devices with fast or complex multi-scale responses.

  • Applications in biomedical, micromechanical, and optoelectronic fields.


Supervision & Facilities

  • Conducted in the Centre for Additive Manufacturing (CfAM) and Additive BioFabrication Laboratory.

  • Work in a large interdisciplinary team:

    • 9 PhD students, 15 postdocs, 18 academics from 5 universities, 11 industry partners.

  • Access to state-of-the-art 3D/4D printing equipment and advanced bioprinting facilities.


Eligibility & Requirements

  • Background in engineering, materials science, chemistry, or related physical sciences.

  • 2:1 or First-Class degree required.

  • Willingness to learn new disciplines and innovate in materials, 3D printing, biotechnology, and engineering.

  • Open to UK and international students.


Funding & Duration

  • Start: October 2026

  • Duration: 42 months

  • Funding will be provided after candidate selection via a competitive University of Nottingham process (covers home tuition and UKRI stipend).
