About the Position

University College Cork (UCC) wishes to appoint an academic to the position of Lecturer (Below the Bar) in English Literature, reporting to the Head of the School of English and Digital Humanities.

In addition to lecturing and conducting research in English Literature (1700–1830), the successful candidate will be expected to teach in an area of Critical Theory, Cultural Theory, or Literary Theory, which is an essential requirement of the post.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in English Literature focusing on the period 1700–1830 and will demonstrate excellence in teaching and research in the long eighteenth century and in theoretical approaches to literature and culture.

The role requires:

  • A commitment to research-led teaching.
  • The ability to supervise undergraduate dissertations.
  • The ability to supervise postgraduate research projects.

Key Responsibilities

In accordance with the University's strategic objective as a research-led institution, the successful candidate will:

  • Teach and examine students.
  • Conduct research and research-led teaching.
  • Contribute to the University, the discipline and the wider community.
  • Undertake administrative duties.
  • Carry out other duties appropriate to the post under the general direction of the Head of the School of English and Digital Humanities.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • A PhD in English Literature with a focus on the period 1700–1830.
  • Excellence in teaching and research relating to the long eighteenth century.
  • Expertise in theoretical approaches to literature and culture.
  • Commitment to research-led teaching.
  • Ability to supervise undergraduate dissertations.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research projects.
  • Ability to teach in Critical Theory, Cultural Theory, or Literary Theory.

Salary

Appointment may be made on the Lecturer (Below the Bar) salary scale:

  • Scale B: €43,028 – €73,909.
  • Scale A: €45,116 – €70,327.

Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.


Selection Process

The University may, at its discretion, make additional appointment(s) from this competition following the conclusion of the recruitment process.
