The Provost Office at HBKU oversees academic planning, faculty development, and quality assurance, working closely with the Colleges, Research Institutes, and other institutions in Education City. Position Overview HBKU invites applications for the position of General Counsel, reporting to the President and working closely with the University’s leadership team. The General Counsel will provide legal advice and guidance across the University, overseeing compliance, corporate affairs, contracts, employment matters, and engagement with external counsel. This position is ideal for a seasoned lawyer seeking a dynamic environment involving collaboration with internal stakeholders, external government officials, and private sector leaders in Qatar and internationally. Key Responsibilities Develop and implement legal strategies aligned with HBKU’s objectives and priorities. Provide legal advice on a broad range of areas including: employment, contracts, real estate, research, technology transfer, intellectual property, commercialization, academic affairs, cybersecurity, data protection, and compliance with applicable laws. Oversee the registration and legal incorporation of new HBKU-associated institutions. Identify and mitigate potential legal risks, working with internal risk management functions. Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents. Advise on compliance with laws, regulations, and university policies. Represent HBKU in legal matters before regulatory agencies, government bodies, and other stakeholders. Manage legal disputes, claims, and litigation involving HBKU. Develop and deliver legal training programs to enhance awareness of legal issues and compliance requirements. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and maintain legal policies and procedures. Keep senior leadership informed of legal developments and potential risks. Perform other duties as assigned by the President. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Law or Juris Doctor (JD); Master’s degree preferred. 8–10+ years of relevant experience, ideally in higher education, large non-profit, or public sector organizations. Active membership in a bar association or law society from a reputable jurisdiction. Strong knowledge across corporate law, labor law, intellectual property law, and litigation. Excellent negotiation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English; Arabic proficiency is an advantage. High professional ethics, integrity, and client service orientation. Proficiency in MS Office applications. Strong knowledge across corporate law, labor law, intellectual property law, and litigation.
Excellent negotiation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English; Arabic proficiency is an advantage.
High professional ethics, integrity, and client service orientation.
Proficiency in MS Office applications.
