School Background

The School of English, Irish, and Communication at UL houses the following subjects:

  • Irish Language and Literature

  • English

  • Journalism

  • Technical Communication and Instructional Design

  • Aonad na Gaeilge (supports Irish language usage throughout the University and wider community)

The School offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Faculty members are active in national and international research projects, supervise doctoral and post-doctoral scholars, and contribute to other University programmes.

  • The English faculty comprises 16 academic staff, supported by 2 administrative staff.

  • English is taught across undergraduate programmes and is one of the most popular subjects on the common-entry BA Arts degree.

  • The School offers MA in English and MA in Creative Writing.

  • English Language and Literature at UL is ranked 201-250 in QS Rankings.

The Glucksman Chair was established through the generosity of UL Friend and UL Foundation Director, Dr Loretta Brennan Glucksman, and her late husband, Dr Lewis L. Glucksman, reflecting their interest in contemporary Ireland and modern Irish literature.


Job Synopsis

The Glucksman Chair in Contemporary Writing in English focuses on 20th and 21st-Century Writing in English, with an emphasis on contemporary writing. While Irish writers may be favoured, the primary focus is contemporary writing in English.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be a scholar of international standing with an outstanding research and publication record

  • Combine academic and research credentials with a record of educational innovation and strategic leadership

  • Promote the study of English at UL at all levels and stimulate interest in the subject in the academic community and beyond

  • Research, teach, guide, and inspire students at all levels

  • Lead and oversee teaching and curriculum development in English

  • Advise and mentor early career researchers and colleagues

  • Attract funding and manage funded projects

  • Undertake senior leadership duties and contribute to academic strategy


Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (level 10 NFQ) in English Literature

  • Strong academic, research, and leadership skills

  • Commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and societal impact
