Description

The Department of Medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto invites applications for the position of Director, Undergraduate Medical Education. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the University of Toronto. Successful completion of the Continuing Faculty Appointment Review (CFAR) is required. Preference will be given to applicants at the rank of Assistant Professor or above.

The term of the Director, Undergraduate Medical Education appointment is five years, with the possibility of one renewal following a successful review. The anticipated start date is March 1, 2026, or an alternative date as mutually agreed, with a transition/mentorship period prior to the start date.


Position Overview

Undergraduate Medical Education is a vital function within the Department of Medicine, the largest individual contributor to the education of medical students in the Faculty of Medicine, both in terms of the number of participating faculty and the volume of teaching hours.

The Director of Undergraduate Medical Education is a highly valued leadership position, pivotal to the overall success of the Department. The role oversees all educational activities within the Internal Medicine Year 3 and Year 4 clinical clerkships, including direction and guidance for:

  • Curriculum delivery and innovation

  • Curriculum change and organizational structure

  • Teaching, evaluation, and educational scholarship

The Director reports directly to the Vice-Chair, Education (or designate) and the Departmental Division Director, and is also accountable to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education.


Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a respected clinical teacher or educator and innovative leader with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated interest in education. A strong track record of educational scholarship and innovation would be an asset.

Applicants must:

  • Hold an MD degree

  • Be a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or eligible for certification

  • Be eligible for licensure in Ontario

The preferred hospital site for the Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and will be one of the following fully affiliated University sites: Sinai Health Systems, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC), St. Michael’s Hospital, or University Health Network (UHN).

The Director will receive an annual stipend of $45,000 plus HST (if applicable) and administrative support from the Department of Medicine.
