Department Overview
The Department of Building and Environmental Technology at Lund University, Faculty of Engineering invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor.

The Division of Risk Management and Societal Safety, at the Department of Building and Environmental Technology, conducts research and education in societal risk and crisis management. We develop knowledge about how individuals, organizations, and society prevent, prepare for, respond to, recover from, and learn and adapt to events that may threaten something of value.

We also carry out research aimed at developing methods, processes, and artifacts to better understand and manage risks, crises, and disasters in various contexts – both in peacetime and during heightened preparedness.

Currently, the division employs 23 people, with an additional 8 affiliated staff representing diverse expertise including engineers, psychologists, and sociologists. We value diversity in terms of our employees’ backgrounds and competencies.

This position is intended to strengthen the division in risk analysis and risk management, particularly in applying these tools in physical planning and consideration of risks and crisis preparedness.


Subject
Risk management with a focus on risk and preparedness consideration in land use planning.


Subject Description
Risk analysis and risk management are essential tools for building safe and resilient societies. They can be applied in regional plans, comprehensive plans, detailed development plans, and hazardous activities. Relevant risks include industrial hazards, hazardous material transport, natural hazards, and intentional threats.

Risk analyses support informed decision-making, crucial in land use planning with long-term consequences. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses are valuable, with methods tailored to specific contexts.


Work Duties
This is a tenure-track position aimed at developing independent research and teaching.

Work duties include:

  • Research within the subject area.

  • Teaching at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.

  • Teaching focused on commissioned education, including development of new commissioned education.

  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.

  • Actively seeking external research funding.

  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.

  • Related administrative duties.


Qualification Requirements
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent research competence.

Primary consideration is given to those awarded a doctorate within seven years of the application deadline. Exceptions may apply for special circumstances (e.g., parental leave, illness).


Assessment Criteria

  • Ability to develop and conduct high-quality research.

  • Teaching ability.

Additional Requirements

  • Excellent written and spoken English.

  • Sufficient Swedish proficiency for educational and administrative tasks.

  • Collaborative skills, initiative, independence, and interest in leadership.

Other Qualifications

  • Experience in commissioned education for risk analysis.

  • Practical experience in risk analysis and management across various industries, in Sweden and internationally.

  • Ability to complement and strengthen the department’s activities.


Terms of Employment
Full-time, fixed-term employment for 6 years.
Regulated under Chapter 4 Section 12a§ HEA.
Includes opportunities for professional and pedagogical development with the aim of qualifying for senior lecturer.

Promotion to Senior Lecturer
During employment, an Assistant Professor may apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer if they meet specific criteria.

Requirements:

  • PhD or equivalent professional expertise.

  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.

  • Completed five weeks of teaching and learning training (or equivalent).

Assessment Criteria Include:

  • Strong national and international research standing.

  • High teaching ability and leadership in teaching.

  • Ability to supervise doctoral students.

  • Ability to collaborate with society and communicate activities.

  • Ability to lead and develop activities.

Additional requirements include independence, research progression, and ability to attract external funding.
