Position Overview

Position title: Biomedical Informatics Research
Salary range: $118,000 – $200,000
The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay at appointment, as determined by appointment type, rank, and/or step. Salary is negotiated annually. Additional compensation may be available if the position includes membership in the Health Sciences Compensation Plan.

Position Description

The Division of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) invites applications for a tenure-track or in-residence Assistant Professor position in Biomedical Informatics Research.

DBMI seeks world-class scholars whose research advances data-powered health and biomedical discovery. The division is committed to academic excellence, diversity, and advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) within the faculty, staff, and student community.

DBMI has strong research and service programs in areas including:

  • Clinical and translational informatics

  • Bioinformatics and biomedical data modeling

  • Ontologies and natural language processing

  • Health AI and machine learning

  • Privacy technologies and data governance

  • Global health and population health informatics

  • Equity and quality informatics

The division’s current research portfolio exceeds $23 million per year in extramural funding, with active involvement in national programs such as the NIH All of Us Research Program and large-scale projects supporting the NIH, VA, CDC, and the State of California.

The selected candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop and maintain a high-quality, externally funded research program in biomedical informatics.

  • Design, implement, and apply innovative computational tools and methods that advance biomedical discovery and health outcomes.

  • Contribute to the division’s educational mission through teaching and mentoring.

  • Provide service to the university and broader academic community consistent with rank.

  • (If clinically trained) Provide patient care consistent with area of specialization.

Appointments will be made at the Assistant Professor level, in the Ladder Rank (50%) / In-Residence (50%) or 100% Ladder Rank series, depending on qualifications and funding.
Candidates must be partially or fully self-funded through extramural research support.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application):

  • Ph.D. or doctoral degree in biomedical informatics, computer science, or a related discipline,
    OR a health sciences doctoral degree (MD, DO, DMD, or equivalent).

  • Minimum of three peer-reviewed publications within the past 24 months.

  • Demonstrated experience teaching at least one class in biomedical informatics or a related field.

  • An independent extramurally funded research program (e.g., NIH R01 or equivalent).

  • Must be partially or fully self-funded at the time of appointment.

  • Candidates with clinical degrees must have or be eligible for a California medical license.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience mentoring undergraduate or graduate students in informatics, computer science, or health-related computational research.

  • Experience teaching courses in biomedical informatics, computational health sciences, or implementation science.
