Job Description

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure stream position in Computational Biology and Data Science applied to Biological Systems and Biomedical Sciences.

  • Appointment: Assistant Professor

  • Anticipated start date: July 1, 2026

  • The successful candidate will be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC).


Eligibility and Diversity Requirements

  • To address systemic barriers and increase diversity in the Canada Research Chairs Program, selection is limited to candidates who identify as members of one or more of the four federally-designated groups:

    • Women and gender minorities (including trans, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, gender fluid)

    • Racialized persons/visible minorities

  • Applicants must self-identify as part of one or more federally-designated groups in their cover letter.

  • CRC nominees must:

    • Align their research with Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) eligibility

    • Hold or be actively applying for tri-agency funding

    • Be within 10 years of receiving their PhD (exceptions possible for career interruptions)


Qualifications

  • PhD in biology, biomedical sciences, computational biology, AI/machine learning, bioinformatics, or related area

  • Minimum 2 years postdoctoral training in academia or industry

  • Demonstrated record of research and teaching excellence

  • Ability to pursue interdisciplinary, innovative, and independent research

  • Capacity to establish an externally funded research program integrating basic biology and clinical research through UTSC and the Scarborough Health Network (SHN)


Research and Teaching Expectations

  • Research Excellence:

    • Publications in top-ranked, field-relevant journals

    • Research statement, conference presentations, awards, referee endorsements

  • Teaching Excellence:

    • Teaching dossier including statement of teaching philosophy, sample course materials, teaching evaluations, or other evidence of superior teaching

    • Experience as teaching assistant, course instructor, workshops/seminars, student mentorship

  • Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI):

    • Evidence of commitment to EDI in research, teaching, and service

    • 1-2 page EDI statement describing contributions to inclusivity, mentoring, or inclusive pedagogy

  • Graduate and Undergraduate Teaching:

    • Participation in UTSC undergraduate and graduate programs

    • Graduate appointment in the Department of Cell and Systems Biology

  • Access to core research facilities at UTSC:

    • Vivarium

    • Centre for Microscopy and Bioanalysis

    • TRACES (Technology Research Analytical Centre for Environmental Sciences)

    • Centre for the Analysis of Genome Evolution and Function

    • University of Toronto SciNet high-performance computing

  • Partnership with SHN provides access to clinical data, including rare disease cohorts


Salary

  • $138,000 – $153,000 CAD per annum, depending on experience

  • Negotiable for exceptionally qualified candidates
