About the Department of Marine Sciences

The Department conducts research, education, and innovation related to the science of the ocean and its resources.

Its activities are based in:

The department has an interdisciplinary scope covering:

  • Marine biology
  • Marine chemistry

Research spans all marine environments, from coastal waters to the open ocean and polar regions. It is involved in international collaborations and expeditions, including large-scale global ocean projects.


Position Overview

We are looking for a highly motivated and curious Data Coordinator to support ocean research through advanced data management of unique observational datasets.

You will work at the intersection of:

  • Oceanography
  • Data science
  • Environmental research

Your work will transform raw observational data into:

  • Quality-controlled datasets
  • Findable and reusable scientific outputs (FAIR principles)
  • Data supporting scientific research and decision-making

You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary research team and contribute to understanding ocean dynamics and climate variability.


Research Context & Projects

You may work within international projects including:

  • WHIRLS (ERC project): www.whirls.eu
  • SOFIA project
  • Collaborations across France, Germany, and South Africa

Key Responsibilities

Within the Polar Gliders research group (www.polargliders.com), responsibilities include:

Data Management

  • Processing observational datasets (gliders, USVs, ships, etc.)
  • Applying metadata standards and FAIR principles
  • Publishing datasets on Zenodo and ERDDAP
  • Maintaining ERDDAP data server

Software & Infrastructure

  • Maintaining polargliders.com website
  • Managing reproducible code for scientific data processing and visualization
  • Managing Google Drive documentation systems
  • Maintaining local server infrastructure

Optional / Development Tasks

  • Training in remote piloting of gliders and USVs
  • Participation in oceanographic expeditions
  • Attendance at project meetings and workshops

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Ocean Science or equivalent
  • Experience with Python and GitHub (open-source workflows)
  • Ability to work in international and interdisciplinary teams
  • Strong communication skills in English (oral and written)
  • Ability to adapt to dynamic research environments
  • Proactive problem-solving skills
  • Interest in marine sensors and scientific instrumentation

Personal qualities are highly emphasized.
